K-SWISS x ATP: A New Chapter in Tennis Footwear

K-SWISS x ATP: A New Chapter in Tennis Footwear

Aimee Lee

At the professional level, every point puts footwear to work.

A player accelerates toward a short ball, stops on a dime, changes direction, recovers to the baseline, then does it all again seconds later. Over the course of a match, those movements add up to hours of repeated impact, lateral force, and explosive movement.

That is why professional tennis shoes are designed differently from general athletic footwear. Tennis demands a specific combination of stability, responsiveness, traction, and durability built around the way players actually move on court.

For K-SWISS, understanding those demands has been part of the brand since 1966. Now, as K-SWISS becomes the Official Footwear Partner of the ATP, that connection to professional tennis is entering a new chapter.

Professional Tennis Demands More From Footwear

Tennis movement is rarely straightforward.

Unlike activities centered primarily around forward motion, tennis requires players to move in virtually every direction. They sprint toward the net, shuffle across the baseline, reach wide for defensive shots, stop abruptly, and immediately accelerate toward the next ball.

Professional competition amplifies those demands.

Matches can stretch for hours, requiring players to repeat explosive movements while maintaining their footing and managing the cumulative impact of hard court contact. A tennis shoe must provide support without feeling restrictive.

The challenge is balance. Players need enough structure to feel secure during aggressive lateral movement, but enough responsiveness to accelerate quickly. They need cushioning for repeated impact without sacrificing connection to the court.

It is a specialized job—and one general athletic shoes aren't necessarily designed to do.

Why Speed, Stability and Durability Matter on Court

Three qualities matter most as play intensifies: speed, stability, and durability.

Speed starts with efficient movement. Professional players react in fractions of a second, so their footwear needs to support quick first steps and rapid transitions without unnecessary weight or bulk.

Stability becomes critical during lateral movement. A running stride generally follows a forward path, while tennis repeatedly asks players to plant, cut, pivot, and push off at sharp angles. Pro tennis shoes are engineered to create a secure base for those movements.

Then there is durability.

Every slide, stop, and change of direction creates friction between the shoe and court. High-wear areas can experience repeated stress during a single match, let alone an entire season of training and competition. Professional tennis footwear must withstand that contact while delivering dependable traction and support.

K-SWISS has continued to develop tennis shoe technology around these demands, including working directly with professional players on footwear innovation and the K-Frame performance platform. Current K-SWISS ATP players include Andrey Rublev, Tomás Martín Etcheverry, Thiago Agustín Tirante, and Zhizhen Zhang.

What Professionals Need From Tennis Footwear

Professional tennis extends well beyond the players competing for each point.

Umpires, physios, officials, and other professionals can spend long stretches of the day on or around the court. Their movements may differ from an ATP player's, but dependable footwear still matters.

For these professionals, all-day comfort and support matter even more. Tournament days can mean hours spent standing, walking between courts, moving through facilities, or responding quickly when their role requires it.

The ideal footwear therefore depends on the job.

A player may prioritize explosive response, lateral stability, and court durability. An official may place greater emphasis on cushioning, support, and comfort through extended periods on their feet. In both cases, the footwear has to perform in an environment where tennis never really stops.

Through the new partnership, K-SWISS will provide footwear to ATP umpires, physios, and key officials, extending the brand's presence to more of the professionals who keep the Tour moving.

What the ATP Partnership Means for K-SWISS

For K-SWISS, becoming the Official Footwear Partner of the ATP is both a milestone and a natural continuation of the brand's history. It makes perfect sense.

K-SWISS began in California in 1966 with a shoe built specifically for tennis. Inspired by the supportive construction of leather ski boots, the brand's founders created the K-Swiss Classic, recognized as the world's first all-leather tennis shoe. Six decades later, tennis remains at the center of the brand.

The new multi-year ATP partnership brings that heritage onto one of the sport's biggest global stages.

In addition to outfitting ATP officials, K-SWISS will offer ATP players without existing footwear sponsors the option to compete in K-SWISS. The partnership will also introduce a collection of five ATP-branded tennis shoes, available globally through K-SWISS and the ATP online retail store, as well as through in-person ATP stores at select tournaments.

The partnership was formally signed in New York on August 27, 2026, as part of the K-SWISS 60th anniversary celebrations.

It is a fitting moment for a brand that has spent 60 years evolving alongside the game. Professional tennis keeps getting faster, more physical, and more demanding. The footwear has to evolve with it.

With K-SWISS and the ATP now stepping onto the same court, the next 60 years of tennis are already in motion.

FAQs

How Do I Choose the Right Size in K-Swiss Shoes?

Refer to our official Size Guide for exact conversions (US, UK, EU, and CM). If you have wider feet or prefer extra room for performance tennis socks during match play, consider going half a size up.

What Should I Look for in a Good Pair of Tennis Shoes?

A good pair of tennis shoes should support quick changes of direction, provide reliable court traction, and withstand repeated movement. Here are four key features to consider:

  • Lateral Support: Tennis involves frequent side-to-side movements. Supportive midfoot structures, such as K-Swiss 180 PSC™ or 360 PSC™ technology in select models, help provide stability during quick cuts and changes of direction.
  • Durable Outsoles: Hard-court play creates repeated friction. K-Swiss AOSTA® rubber outsoles are designed to provide durability and traction on the court.
  • Cushioning: Midsole technologies such as CMEVA and Surge 7.0, available in select models, are designed to provide cushioning and a responsive underfoot feel.
  • Toe Protection: Reinforced upper materials, such as Durawrap™ in select models, help protect high-wear areas during demanding court movements.

Consider your playing frequency, court surface, and preferred fit when choosing your next pair.

Can I Wear Tennis Shoes for Everyday Activities?

Yes, but the best choice depends on where and how you plan to wear them.

  • Lifestyle Shoes: Styles such as the Classic VN and ST329 CMF offer a heritage-inspired look that pairs easily with casual outfits.
  • Performance Shoes: Models in the Hypercourt and Ultrashot families are designed for court movement, traction, and support. They may also work for some casual activities, depending on your comfort and the shoe's design.

For regular walking or all-day wear, consider cushioning, fit, breathability, and the surfaces you'll be walking on. Tennis shoes designed for court use may feel firmer or heavier than shoes made specifically for walking or running.

What Is the Difference Between Tennis Shoes and Running Shoes?

  • Tennis shoes are designed for quick side-to-side movements, sudden stops, and changes of direction, with durable outsoles and added lateral support for court play.
  • Running shoes are built primarily for forward motion, focusing on cushioning and comfort for repetitive strides. For the best fit and performance, choose shoes designed for your intended activity.

How do I care for my K-Swiss shoes?

Regular cleaning can help keep your K-Swiss shoes looking their best. The right method depends on the upper material, so always check the care instructions for your specific pair.

  • Leather and Synthetic Uppers: Gently wipe away dirt with a soft, damp cloth. If needed, use a small amount of mild soap that's suitable for the material.
  • Mesh and Fabric Uppers: Remove loose dirt with a soft brush, then gently clean with a damp cloth. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that could damage the fabric.
  • Laces and Insoles: If removable, clean them separately according to their care instructions and allow them to dry completely before reinserting them.
  • Air-Drying: Let your shoes dry naturally at room temperature in a well-ventilated area.

A Few Things to Avoid:

  • Avoid machine washing or tumble drying unless the product's care instructions explicitly allow it.
  • Keep shoes away from direct heat, radiators, and other high-temperature sources.
  • Avoid harsh cleaners that may damage the materials, finish, or adhesives.
